Perak: 40th Cooking and Flag Signaling Competition

270 members from all over Perak participated in the 40th Cooking and Flag Signaling Competition this morning at SMK St. Anthony, Teluk Intan, Perak. Organised by St. John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM), Perak, the state is the only one in the country to hold such competition almost annually.

Flag signaling competition began in 1969 as cadet activity and later, cooking was added. Flag signaling is a system conveying information at a distance by means of visual signals with hand-held flags. Both skills are part of the Cadet Proficiency Badge scheme. When a cadet accumulates 12 badges, they are qualified for the Grand Prior’s Award Badge, awarded by the HRH Duke of Gloucester.

Renowned chefs were invited to judge the cooking competition, including Chef Alan Wong with 29 years experience in the industry, Chef Kenny Low with 8 international awards and the local pride of Teluk Intan, Chef Khiew who bagged three international culinary awards.

SMJK San Min, Teluk Intan bagged champions for cooking competition in 2 categories and swept gold in all four categories of flag signaling. SMJK Ayer Tawar bagged 3 silvers and a bronze in the competitions.

For the Overall Champion which was up for grab among three areas in the state, SJAM South Area, Perak took the challenge trophy.

Dr. Chan Tong Meng who is the State Commander of SJAM Perak officiated the closing ceremony and gave away prizes.
