Notes from Ms. Chew Hoong Ling
In 2008, St. John Ambulance of Malaysia embarked on an ambitious project to publish the centenary book. A Remarkable Century of Service was completed and published in 2009. I was involved in the early part of the project but left for personal reasons. Later in 2016, when I returned to serve SJAM South Area, Perak, I was asked to edit the Area’s 75th anniversary souvenir, Anson Glitters for Mankind.
In the two projects, I have collected many valuable materials, texts, books and notes which I find interesting. These valuable information cannot be left unrecorded. This year, for the purpose of regaining correct facts and history for this website, again I did research and found more people and even more interesting stories.
I do not claim all stories I wrote to be correct but I have placed sources and links to the original texts I found. My hope is to document all that I found, so these “by-products” of the three projects will not be wasted.
It is in this time of the century that research has been much easier, especially so when many libraries around the world are digitizing documents and books. Therefore, credit goes to all the efforts of libraries – The National Library of Australia (where I found and bought scanned copy of the Report of the Chief Commissioner of the Brigade Overseas – for the year ending 31st December, 1939), The British Library (where I found the 1950 SJAA Perak Review) and of course The National Library of Singapore, my main source of old Malaya newspapers online. I am also grateful to those who have kept records, passed to me and gave oral interviews. My gratitude cannot be left unrecorded to those who meticulously scanned and uploaded old school magazines, a source that was useful for this research as early divisions of St. John Ambulance started in schools.
The research is ongoing and it is my highest hope that if you are reading this website and find inaccurate information, do contact us and have a chat! I also hope to meet everyone who still keep their old uniform, records and details of the movement. Looking forward to hear from you!
